During silver nanoparticle production by arc dis-charge in water, water decomposition (e.g. elec-trolysis) was also observed. This results in gen-eration of gaseous hydrogen and oxygen, whichappear in the water as small bubbles partly dis-solved in the water medium. Hydrogen and oxy-gen start to interact with the newly prepared silver nanoparticles. Since hydrogen (molecular or atomicforms) does not adsorb on silver particle surfacesat room temperature [15], and also is not signifi-cantly dissolved in water, it is ultimately removed from the water suspension to the gas phase. How-ever, oxygen (especially atomic) could adsorb andreact with the silver surface at room temperature.
